Taking 2-3 hours, depending on your fitness level, this hike offers the most magnificent views of the Glendalough Valley, Monastic City and Upper Lake. It also brings you to the Miners' Village and the viewing spots for Temple na Skellig, and Saint Kevin's Bed.
Drive to the Upper Lake car park, that is past the Glendalough Hotel, over the bridge and 2k up the narrow road. I recommend doing it in a clockwise direction as you get to see the Poulanass waterfall, gain elevation quickly and climb the steepest part, the Spinc, while you're fresh.
Once you're up, you join a narrow boardwalk over the bog. This can be slippery in the wet and good footwear is a must. Be careful not to misstep while taking in the scenery. There are plenty of viewing points where photos can be safely taken. The weather is changeable so always have rain gear handy. Drinking water is essential on sunny days.
Besides for the breathtaking views of the mountains and lake, there are often wild goats and deer grazing on the hillside, and birds of prey hunting in the skies. At the bridge on the westernmost point of the hike, there are grassy areas perfect for a picnic on good days. After this there is a difficult rocky section that requires considerable care, especially for those of moderate fitness or agility.
This brings you to the old miners' village and a much earned rest, finishing off with a relaxing, tree-lined walk along the lake back to the car park and coffee, snacks and the essential 99 ice cream cone.
